What is Breastmilk?

To truly understand the amazement of breastmilk you need to know what it is. The Wiki defines breastmilk here.

Breastmilk is the most natural way to feed your baby, it has most of the nutrition your baby needs for as long as you breastfeed. One of the most amazing thing about breastmilk, is that as your baby gets older, your breastmilk automatically changes to fit your baby's growing nutritional needs.

For example: Your milk is very different for your 6 month old than it was when your baby was 2 months old.

Personally, I think breastmilk is similar to a super power! It can shoot across the room (yes it can!), it provides your child with the proper amount of nutrition, never provides too much, and for the time you are nursing........ well let's just say you do not need a breast enlargement! Ohhhhh yes, the power of breastmilk.

New York Times and Breastfeeding

The New York Times published an article about a lactation consultant. The article brings great
awareness to breastfeeding and the people who work to support it! I would love to met this woman..she seems funny yet wonderfully helpful! Reminds me of the Lactation consultant, Debbie, I had while Joslyn was at Scottish Rite, Children's Health Care of ATL. She did wonders with my confidence and helped walk us through Joslyn's breath Apnea and silent reflux.

Any thoughts on this article?

Breastfeeding Positions

There are as many ways to breast feed as there are women in the world! The best way to find the correct breastfeeding position for you, is to do some research and try them out.
For babies with reflux and other health issues, the traditional "cradle hold" may not work well. Both of my daughters were/are nursed on an incline. I had/have them almost in a sitting position with their bottoms resting on my thigh.
There is also the "football hold", which I did try with my older daughter....but it was not very comfy for us.
Which ever position you choose, make sure it is comfy for you and your baby. If it is not......try another one. Or you can make up your own, like I did, and give it your own special name! I call mine "The Jacky sit." hehe

On Demand or On a Schedule

There are different ways to nurse your baby. There is "on demand" and "on a schedule."
On demand simply means that you feed your baby when he is showing signs of being hungry.
On a schedule means that you put your child on a feeding schedule through out the day. Both are very different from each other. I choose to feed my babies on a schedule. At first they nursed every 1.5- 2 hours... but after a few weeks they were nursing every 3 hours during the day and sleeping all night. For example: our feeding schedule was/is 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, 7 pm, and 9:30 pm.
If you decide to nurse on a schedule, it is a good idea to wake your baby during the day to nurse. "Never wake a sleeping baby" is an old saying, but if you want your baby to sleep all night...wake them during the day.
Also, to get to a 3 hour time frame you can put off each feeding by 5 minutes. In a couple of days your schedule will be set. But it is important to stay dedicated to the schedule you set. That way you and baby wont get thrown off.

Have any of you Nummie Mummies fed on demand? If so, what tips can you share?

Welcome to Mummies Nummies!

Hello to everyone! My name is Jacky and this is Mummies nummies! I decided to start a breast feeding blog as a way to chronicle all the tricks I have learned along the way. Breast feeding had always been a goal for me and I thought it would be simple.....just pop it out and pop baby on! Man I was wrong!
Our first daughter was born with Silent Reflux and breath needless to say nursing was painful for her. She also did not know how to suck (at all) for the first couple days.
I was bound and determined not to give up. We made it through for 11 months!
I am currently nursing our second daughter (who is 14 weeks old today) and I had to dig up my old tricks (and find new ones) as she also has Reflux. Luckily she is a champion sucker!

This blog will have some of my tricks and stories, news about breast feeding as well as some of your tricks and stories! Please feel free to contact me with any feedback or if you have something you would like to share.

Congrats to every Mummie who makes Nummies!
