Hi Mummies!

My name is Courtney and I'm so excited to be the lactation educator for Mummies Nummies.

Growing up I never knew just what it was I wanted to be (others than "rich mans wife" but I married a school teacher. WONDERFUL man...not rich.) Our first son was born in 2008 and I had loads of trouble feeding him. I had the IBCLC come to my room every day at the hospital, but no amount of grabbing my breast and my baby's head and smashing them together seemed to be helping us. So we ended up starting formula in the hospital.

With the help of the wonderful IBCLC at my pediatricians office, I dutifully pumped and gave my son as much breastmilk as possible for 6 months.  I enjoyed my time with the lactation consultant and this was the first time that I thought "hey...that could be the job for me."

When our second son was born I was determined that breastfeeding was going to go right from the start. I was wrong. We ended up using formula in the hospital, and the nipple shield for the first four weeks of his life. I am happy to say that he is now 10 months old, nursing happily and fat...my gosh is he fat. It makes me proud.

So when I began thinking, again, about what I want to be when I grow up (I'm almost 30, might have been good if I had thought of this earlier) I came again to Lactation Consultant. I mean really, how many of us even knew LCs existed before we needed one!?! I trained with a brilliant, compassionate and amazing CAPPA educator and am now a Certified Lactation Educator.

I am the founder of Kangaroots, which is an early parenting educational resource. I teach classes on breastfeeding, babywearing, making your own baby food and some other "crunchy" things.  I really do have a passion for new moms and their babies. I think the childbearing year is just the most wonderful time and I am so honored to get to be a part of it with so many women.

I am super excited to be a part of Mummies Nummies and all of your lives. I am looking forward to doing a few guest blogs and helping you ladies troubleshoot some of the little kinks that arise in nursing and parenting...and I'm looking forward to picking your brains too!

  1. Welcome! Its lovely to hear from you, Please can you tell me if you have any info on becoming a LC in the Uk at all? I am almost 29 and just feel like this is my calling in life, I breastfed my daughter who is almost three for 19months and just adored the experience and find it sad when people tell me how little support they have had BFing in hospital and afterwards, would love any information. My name is Tracy by the way xx

  2. Tracy-

I'm trying this again because it didn't post last time! I've sent an e-mail to the woman who taught my CLE class. I know that CAPPA has representation in several different countries so I'm waiting to hear back from her about what we have in the UK. I'll let you know somthing as soon as I do!

  4. I agree. And as I side note...I love what I'm doing. it really is wonderful, if you decide to pursue it I'm sure you'll love it too. CAPPA does not have any educator programs in the UK right now but here's my advice for moving forward. Go to the CAPPA website and look into the distane program. It's a lot of work to get certified (in any program) but it has totally been worth it. And with the distance program you'll have the course on DVD so you can do a refresher course for yourself anytime. Let me know what you decide to do and if I can help you at all along the way :)
