The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding outlines

This morning, The Surgeon General held a press conference to lay out ways to help support breastfeeding moms. There was a lot of information put out there.... and luckily they put it online as well. Here is the News Release .
What I found fasinating was the breastfeeding rates , Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin, stated. In her press release she stated
"While 75 percent of U.S. babies start out breastfeeding, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, only 13 percent are exclusively breastfed at the end of six months.  The rates are particularly low among African-American infants."

I knew the rates were low at the 6 month mark.... but did not really know that they were that low!
She also went on to say
“I believe that we as a nation are beginning to see a shift in how we think and talk about breastfeeding,” said Dr. Benjamin.  “With this ‘Call to Action,’ I am urging everyone to help make breastfeeding easier.”

It would be great if this shift she is referring to is a positive one.

They also released a Fact Sheet.
Which basically outlines steps that can be taken to remove some of the obstacles faced by women who want to breastfeed their babies.

I have very high hopes that this Call To Action will help all mummies out there and will open the "naysayers" eyes to see that breastfeeding is not gross and that it is an important role in the future of our children.
