So do you remember the Always Pad commercial where a woman is laying in bed (while on her period) with a "female Drill Sergeant" standing watch over her? Every time the poor woman laid on her back, curled up into a ball, or just simply got comfy the "Drill Sergeant" blew that horrific whistle? How many of you are like that? How many of you hate your female curse, your Aunt Flow, your monthly visitor? How many of you hate it even more at night?! (MY HAND IS UP.... is yours?) What if I told you I found something that changes the way I sleep at night, during my time of the yucky month? Do I have your attention? WONDERFUL!!!!
I will be the first to admit that everything changed after we had Kit Kat. My cycle went from a 5 day light flow with no cramps to a 7 to 8 day heavy flow with major cramps! I mean lay in bed for hours feeling as if my insides were going to fall out! I am not one of those lucky, LUCKY women who didn't have their period until they are done breastfeeding. Nope...... not me! I got my first cycle back just 6 months post baby one and then 5 months post baby two! Yeah...... not lucky!
I hate hate hate everything about having a period! I won't go into too much detail..... well because you all know what it is like. But the mess, the worry, the over thinking..... not to mention the waste! I would use 2 pads each night....just to prevent leaking for those moments I was flat on my back! UGGGGGG!
But in walks The DivaCup, a menstrual cup. I found this product thanks to a blogging friend of mine (shout out to Obsessions of the Trophy Wife!) At first I thought "ewwwwww." I mean really? You put a cup inside you, take it out, wash and repeat? I mean it is bad enough to have to change a pad or tampon.... but then I thought about it. Is there really a difference? Either way you have to change something and being MANY years away from being done with this curse, I have to put up with it anyway! So after I pushed out the gross images in my head, I decided to look into The DivaCup and see what it was all about. To my surprise it was not as yucky as I thought it to be. The wonderful people at The DivaCup offered to send me one (free of charge) to review. So here we go!
Here is what I love about it:
The DivaCup is a non-absorbent menstrual cup that simply collects menstrual flow.
It can be worn for up to 12 hours before emptying, washing and reinserting for use for another 12 hours. It can be used for light or moderate flows and is emptied more often to accommodate heavy flows. Perfect for overnight use. (SWEET!!) It is also Latex-free, BPA-free, plastic-free and has no dyes, colors or additive. Are you a tampon user? We all know that TSS is associated with higher absorbency tampons...well, The DivaCup collects, rather than absorbs, and does not change your natural moisture levels like tampons do. (Of course, if you have had TSS before, definitely consult your doctor before using it.) It also saves MONEY!!! No more needing to run out to the store for pads! How great is that freedom?!
So on paper it looks amazing, right? But how did it hold up to the big test? Well luckily I got my DivaCup right before Aunt Flow came to visit (she really should call before she stops in for a week right?!) I took it out of the box and kind of held it in my hand for a few minutes. Bigger than I thought it was going to be! (Even my husband looked at me with a question look on his face.) But I thought.... heck two babies came out of there and this thing is smaller than they were! It comes with a super cute carrying bag and a Diva pin..... very cute small touches they added.
When the time came to try it out.... I dove right in! I already had it washed and ready to use.... so I sat in the bathroom with the directions and went at it! I did however ask some of you all for some help on folding tips. (Thanks for that by the way!) I had some trouble at first, it does take some practice. The stem was also causing some pain. If the cup is inserted correctly then there should be no pain and you should not feel it at all... but come to find out a good number of users have to cut the stem as it can be too long. Which is super easy. So that is what I did.... and it no longer hurt! Now I will say that I did have a back up pad on... just in case. Which really did not get dirty. I have to admit that when I put The DivaCup in I was afraid to put it in too far. But when I inserted it higher.... all discomfort was gone.
It is not too often you can say that you "forgot" that you were on your period, right? Well to be honest I kind of did! I mean, minus the cramps and bloating...... I really forgot about it! There was no "feeling" of having to race to the bathroom to keep my pad clean (OH COME ON... you know you have done that too!) There was no worry about having extra pads in the downstairs bathroom. And the night time.... OMG amazing! No leaks, no double pads, no need to wear shorts (for that just in case disaster.)
So yes.... I am proud to say I AM A DIVA! Now.... who is ready to join me?! DivaCup has generously offered one of their cups to one of our readers!!!!!!!!! Now, they do have two sizes.... so make sure you know which size will work for you! Oh and did I mention they will also ship INTERNATIONALLY?!!!!!
