But now we have PROOF that breastfeeding reduces the risk of SIDS.... AND exclusive breastfeeding reduces the risk EVEN more! The American Academy of Pediatrics published a study, based on review articles and meta-analyses from 1966 to 2009. Now for those of you who are crazy smart with math and percentages and well... just big words! Here is what they found:
"For infants who received any amount of breast milk for any duration, the univariable SOR was 0.40 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.35–0.44), and the multivariable SOR was 0.55 (95% CI: 0.44–0.69). For any breastfeeding at 2 months of age or older, the univariable SOR was 0.38 (95% CI: 0.27–0.54). The univariable SOR for exclusive breastfeeding of any duration was 0.27 (95% CI: 0.24–0.31)."
Okay.... now for the rest of us (remember how a few months back a "study" came out and said that breastfeeding mummies were found to be less intelligent than non breastfeeding mummies.... well HELLO in this case I am in that category!) here is what they found:
"Breastfeeding is protective against SIDS, and this effect is stronger when breastfeeding is exclusive. The recommendation to breastfeed infants should be included with other SIDS risk-reduction messages to both reduce the risk of SIDS and promote breastfeeding for its many other infant and maternal health benefits."Now.... if you remember the issues we went through with Pooker... SIDS is a HUGE fear for us. Pooker was on a Baby Sense V Motion monitor until she moved to a big girl bed..... and Kit Kat still uses her Baby Sense V Motion Monitor. Best monitor (in our opinion) since it has TWO motion pads. Just helps us sleep and go about our day knowing our Nummie Lovers are safe while sleeping.
So there you go! Keep on breastfeeding mummies!
