Homemade Granola

As I sit here typing this post I am chomping down on some homemade granola, I made this morning. YES! Homemade granola! Let me tell you..... it is sooooo YUMMY! I have never thought about making it. I would buy it at the grocery store (when on sale) and left it at that. But earlier this week a friend of mine told me that she was enjoying the smell of homemade granola..... and well I was curious! She shared the recipe she uses, from Kiss my Spatula and I went to the store!

What had me super excited....was all of the oats and the flax seed. As we all know helps boost all that awesome Mummie's Nummies!

Let me say... finding some of the ingredients was a little difficult. Are all Oats treated equally? (I still don't know.) How about Milled Flax Seed.... is there plain Flax Seed? And where the heck do you find Hazelnuts (let alone chopped ones!)

Okay so the only thing I did not get was the Hazelnuts,  which I substituted with Roasted Peanuts. And you know I HAD to do this..... I shaved one block of Baker's Milk Chocolate, one block of Baker's White Chocolate and added it to the granola when I added the dried cranberries. OHHHH and I found Made in America Apple Juice! That's right... even the apples were from The Good Ol' USA! (Shocker..... it was the store brand Apple Juice!!!!)



  • 4 cups organic rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup chopped or slivered almonds
  • 1/2 cup chopped hazelnuts
  • 2 tbsp flax seeds
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1-2 tablespoons Brewers Yeast
  • 1/2 cup Flaxseed
  • 1/3 cup veggie or olive oil (or 1/3 cup applesauce)
  • 1/3 cup good honey
  • 1/3 cup apple juice or apple cider
  • 1 cup dried cranberries, or favorite dried chopped fruit
  • Directions
    Heat oven to 350ยบ. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the oats, nuts, flax seeds, coconut, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Whisk the oil, honey, and apple juice in measuring cup.
    Pour the liquid mixture over the oat mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until all the oats and nuts are coated. Spread onto a large sheet pan. Bake, stirring occasionally with a spatula, until the mixture turns a nice, even golden brown, around 30-40 minutes, depending on oven.
    Remove granola from the oven and allow to cool completely, stirring occasionally. Add cranberries. Store cooled granola in an airtight container.

     It was so easy to make. I have been munching on it (all by itself) all afternoon.... but I am sure adding it to yogurt, mixing in some milk (which my husband will LOVE!)or any other combo you can think of would be FANTASTIC! I am hooked and will make this more often!

    1. Very similar to a recipe I make for Lactation granola. I use ground flax seed and also throw in nutritional yeast or brewer's yeast, both which are galactagogues.

    2. How much Brewer's Yeast do you use? I was wondering if I could add that in too, but wasn't sure

    3. Oo that sounds so yummy. I hate cranberry but this would be perfect with dried cherries. And I can make my own apple sauce now which is so much better than store bought! yay. Sharing this darlin. :)

    4. Just a couple tablespoons of brewer's yeast. I also have a great recipe for lactation cookies that I can share.
