Breastmilk vs Animal Milk

A Mummie asked a question about the differences between Breastmilk and Cow's milk. Most Mummies know that breastmilk towers over animal milk, when it comes to health benefits. But I could not really answer as to why. So I decided to find out what made each milk different.

Each mammal species produces milk, no surprise there... as each mammal needs to feed their babies. But each form of milk varies from the next..... in many and HUGE ways. Most of these kinds of milk are vastly different compared to human breastmilk

For example: Human breastmilk is thinner and sweeter compared to cow milk. Also, cow milk does not contain sufficient amounts of  vitamin E, iron, or essential fatty acids, which can make babies fed on cow's milk anemic.  Whole cow's milk can also contain excessive amounts of protein, sodium, and potassium, which may put a strain on an infant's immature kidneys. In addition, the proteins and fats in whole cow's milk are more difficult for an infant to digest and absorb than the ones in breast milk.

Antibodies: There are NO antibodies found in animal milk. But breastmilk has antibodies that help "fight back" different strands of viruses and bacteria... and even change according to need.

Water: Breastmilk contains the exact amount of water needed to nourish each Nummie Lover AND adjusts accordingly as well. This is why there is never any need to give your little Nummie Lover a cup of water (at an early age).... your Nummie's got that covered. Animal milk can not adjust the water amount. What you see is what you get.

Fat: Breastmilk contains more fat compared to other animal milk and it is easily digested and absorbed. This is one of the reasons breastfed babies eat more often compared to formula babies. Other animal milk (including animal milk based formulas) simply can not be digested as easily as the fat is completely different.

Protein: Once again breastmilk contains the exact amount of protein needed and adjusts as the Nummie Lover's needs change. Animal milk contains (sometimes as much as) double the amount of protein which is not as easily digested.

Carbohydrates: Breastmilk conatins more carbohydrates compared to any other animal milk. This is important as Carbs are an important source of energy.

Vitamins and Minerals: As long as you are eating a well balanced diet..... your breastmilk will continue to provide the correct amount of vitamins and minerals required for your baby. Animal milk does contain vitamins and minerals. But it has more of some and less of others. They are not equally matched, therefor they are not tailored to your Nummie Lover's needs.

But it does not just stop at cow milk itself....some babies are allergic to one or more of the constituents of cow's milk, most often the cow's milk proteins. These problems can also affect infant formulas that are dairy or cow milk based. (Did you know there are over 100 ingredients found in breastmilk that are NOT found in formula? Even the "new" DHA formulas can not come close.)

I also came across this Human milk vs animal Milk chart that breaks down breastmilk, cow's milk and goat's milk. Pretty interesting, if I do say so myself. (Oh wait I did say so!)

Santa Claus was breastfed!

Have you ever wondered "Hmmmm I wonder if (fill in the blank) was breastfed?" (Okay well I wonder that. Call me odd if you must.) Chances are if they are from WAY back in the day (pre formula days)...  YUPP they were breastfed. BUT if you still find yourself wondering (sometimes I probably need to find something else to think about.... I am sure on that!) all you really need to do is take a LOOK.

Take Santa Claus, for example. OH COME ON HE IS REAL! (or was.... but I go with the IS real option.)

(yes those are my sweet little girls with the Jolly ol' Man! This was taken in 2011.)

Here are the reasons I believe he was breastfed:

Santa has been sharing and giving for a very long time. Through a little Google search I found Santa was born in the THIRD century! Which would make him......well.....SERIOUSLY OLD. Some would say he is timeless. Now this man works very hard, has the energy of a young man, and seems to be in great health. Now we all know that breastfeeding helps reduce the risk of high cholesterol, helps reduce the risk for childhood obesity. Never mind the facts that studies have shown that breastmilk fed babies have lower chances of experiencing SIDS, illnesses, G.I. Track issues, ear infections and many more.......

Take a look at the Jolly Ol' Man himself. He is KNOWN for cherry, rosy cheeks, a jolly laugh, sparkling blue eyes and a special happiness about him. Hmmmmmmm...... he must have been a Nummie Lover!

Now think about all the food this man eats in one night. All the sweets, milk, veggies........ do you think he could eat all of those if he were allergic to SOMETHING? Nah! Studies have proven that the longer a child is exclusively breastfed the lower the risk is for food allergies! So Santa can eat all the Soy, Vegan, Dairy filled cookies and drinks he wants!!! Another great indication this man had a Mummie who made Nummies!

Take in account this man's creativity and his awesome amount of perception! He created a magical home for himself, his wife, his elves and all his reindeer. He found a way to make this magic work, found a way to keep everyone happy (all year round)..... not to mention keep Mrs. Claus happy without a single store in sight! Studies have shown that breastfed babies tend to be more perceptive and tend to have higher IQ's as well. Hmmmmm... yet another clue!

Do you think you could keep mental records of every child who exists on this earth? Sure he has many elves that help him out..... but I do not think the man has a computer.... let alone a smart phone or Tablet! He uses pen and paper..... Naughty and Nice lists....Knows every child by name. I think this goes under the higher IQ category! Hmmmmmmm....... Previous Nummie Lover?

Okay..... I guess the biggest fact of all..... Santa was not born when formula was an option. So I guess that is a pretty big clue that he was breastfed too.

So perhaps this year, as you set out the cookies and carrots...... maybe consider setting out some Nummies too. It might bring back a whole bunch of memories from his Nummie Lovin' days....... and he might leave you an extra present! We all know that the skin to skin contact, the warmth touch, the emotional eye contact....... it is something special. Santa might just think the same!

....Just sayin'!

Pump and Dump?

We have all heard the term "Pump and Dump." It really is a sad concept.

You take the time to grab all needed essentials:
two bottles (for a double pump)
two breast cups
the pump
the tubes
the power cord

Then you find yourself a comfy place to sit and put your feet up.
You attach the tubes to the cup thinger-majigs and to the pump.
You plug the power cord into the outlet and the back of the pump.
Then you attach the breast cup thinger-majigs to your Nummie Makers (then re adjust many times, because they are not "perfectly" positioned.)
Then you turn on the Mummie's Nummies sucking device. (Ever compare your breastpump to a vampire? Wait......I might just have vamps on the mind due to the current book I am reading. Darn Vamps! Always popping up aren't they?!)
You then have to listen as the Vamp inspired breastpump calls you names. (Mine calls me "Wacko".)
You try your hardest not to watch as the first 2 minutes of "letdown cycle do their job..........

THEN

After all of that hard work you have to DUMP IT DOWN THE DRAIN?????!!!!!

Wasteful I say.... just wasteful! But what if, you go through ALL of the above steps............. and you look down to see NOTHING IN THE BOTTLES! Yupp! Nada! Zilch! A big Fat Goose Egg!

Talk about a WASTE!!!!!

Yes, that was me Thursday evening, following my surgery. I wanted to make double sure that my Nummies was safe for Kit Kat. So I decided to pump (what I can remember since I was still kinda out of it.) I set everything up, on my own (one handed too.) I followed all the above steps, even added an extra "Calm down step" and NOTHING!!!!! WTH????!!!!

So I pumped but could not dump. GRRRRR. Then I thought: "why didn't I pump anything out?" So I checked the good ol' hand squeeze method. YUP shot straight across the room. Again I think I growled.

Again I thought "WTH??!!"

I have not seriously pumped since Kit Kat was maybe 1 month old. I tried again when she was older..... (can't remember why) but I was not very successful. I remember (NOW) that I thought (then) my pump was not working correctly..... so why on earth would it work correctly now?

So yeah, I pumped...... but did not dump. Kit Kat missed only one feeding that day (I was still in surgery for that feeding) and she seemed just fine with the nummies she got following my vampire pumping flop.

Maybe my pump spent too much time out in the sun...... well dang! Wait there I go confusing my breastpump to vampires again! Maybe I should put my Kindle down.

The silly things they do

Nursing a toddler can be very entertaining. Its seems Kit Kat will do something new (while nursing) almost weekly. So I decided to jot down a few things she does, while enjoying her Nummies. (All of these she DOES do.... as crazy as it seems.)

*Pick nose (mine and hers)
*Pick ears (mine and hers)
*Play with hair (mine and hers)
*Practice Nursing gymnastics (must be getting ready for the Breastfeeding Winter Olympics)
*Pick her toe nails
*Pick at her feet
*Play with her feet
*Practice her audition for New York City Rockets kick line
*Work on her back stretches
*Play "Peak a boooo"
*Tap her toes on anything she can reach
*Tap on ME
*Sing a song
*Read a book
*Talk
*Yell at older sibling (Pooker) to "go away" without breaking her latch
*Lick ME "Mommy, I not Kit Kat.... I'm a doggie."
*Smile a heart melting smile
*Wave at who ever enters the room (without seeing who it is)
*Giggle
*Pick at my neck, chin, cheek and eyes
*Hold onto the other Nummie Maker (making sure it is still there and ready to go?)
*Hold her snuggly and what ever "friend" she decided to bring with her
*Look up at me with the sweetest expression, an expression that can not be duplicated at any other time. An expression that she only shows while she is nursing. An expression that words can not describe..... it is beyond happy, beyond satisfied, beyond loving........ it is "the look."

Okay so the "licking" one gets me a little grossed out..... but hey it is who she is! I would have it no other way!!!!

Hollyday Designs review and giveaway

To continue our "Lovin' Mummie's Nummies Birthday Bash"......I have saved one of the BEST items I HAVE EVER SEEN for later in the month. Have you ever heard of a Breastmilk Pendant? You heard me right...... a pendant made OUT OF your Nummies!!!!!!!! "WHAT........ HOW........ HUH???!!!!!"

I am not kidding! CREATIVE right??!! I KNOW IT!

So here is show it all started! Years ago, back when Pooker was enjoying her Mummie's Nummies...... I came across an article talking about a Mummie who turns breastmilk into pendants (well really my husband came across it and showed me.) I remember thinking "Oh my gosh! How cool is that?! I sooooooo want one!" Well Santa never came through for me that year...... (he must have been working on something else...) and I kinda just forgot about it. But a few months ago, I came across this Mummie again. This time I contacted her and asked her if she was willing to take part in a review and giveaway with Mummies Nummies. (To my COMPLETE shock) She agreed!!!!!!!!

I was told all I had to do was send her ONE tablespoon of my Nummies, pick what I wanted , what I wanted it to say, and she would take care of the rest.  REALLY?! That is all?????? (really... that was all!) All I did was pay the shipping to send my envelope containing the Mummie's Nummies. (Regular shipping to boot!)

Curious as to how she does it? Well check out her explanation!
So here is my Nummies (hand expressed I might add.... since I could not find my breastpump when I needed it!)

(With my two favorite pictures of my girls......)

Now I had a hard time picking what I wanted..... It was between this:

(GORGEOUS RIGHT!????)

and
(Hard to pick right??!!)

Now she warned me it was a fairly lengthy process, turning the liquid gold into the precious symbol of memories...... but I promised to be patient. Boy was I patient!! hehe

Well do you want to see what I picked????? Okay here it is!!!! **drum roll please.**

(Yupp that is mine!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(I choose the bracelet! I was able to pick the shape (heart) the breastmilk would be formed into and I had the word "Nummies" written on it.) I have to say I am ABSOLUTELY in love! The bracelet is well made (hand braided), the heart shaped Nummies is PERFECT, the hand written "Nummies" looks amazing and well it just brings tears to my eyes just looking at it. If something can bring happy tears to your eyes.... then it has to be amazing. And this bracelet is just that.....AMAZING.

There is NO better way to remember the breastfeeding journey than to actually hold it in your hands. Breastfeeding pictures can only capture so much...... but to have this (forever)...... what a keepsake. This is something I can show my girls, when it is their turn to give their nummie lover some of Mummie's Nummies.

Something that says..... "we did it".

Yes, Pooker and Kit Kat....... we sure did! So happy 2nd birthday to my current Nummie Lover, Kit Kat. Happy 24 months and counting to us. Happy 11 Nummie Lovin' months to Pooker (how long she nursed for.) And happy breastfeeding journey to all of you! Thank you so much for participating in our Birthday Bash. It has been (and continues to be) an amazing journey!

(Okay.... enough tears! Stop rambling! These Mummies want to know how they CAN WIN ONE FOR THEMSELVES!!!!!) Okay........ HollyDays Designs is giving away a pendant (of your CHOICE) worth 65 dollars!!!!! Want to know how you can have one? READ ON MUMMIES, read on!

We made it!!!!

Today is a special day! Kit Kat is two years old today AND that means we have hit our original goal! We made it two years in our breastfeeding journey!!!!!!! I am beyond amazed, shocked, ecstatic, sad, confused.... every emotion you can think of!

Really we made it to two years? Really Kit Kat is TWO?! OMG we made it to our goal! BOOOOOOOO my baby is two! Wait...... we made it two years?! HUH????

As with any other birthday, you expect to wake up and "feel" different. This morning I woke up feeling.... somewhat the same. I woke up knowing that my Nummie Lover was going to want to "eat" as soon as she saw me. I knew that was going to be my first morning activity. But then...... I remembered. Today is the biggest milestone we have ever reached (in breastfeeding.)

When I was pregnant with Pooker, my goal was to hit 12 months. Well I was one month shy of that when we had to stop. (Being a high risk pregnant mummie and breastfeeding do not mix.) I beat myself up over that for so long. I thought I had "failed" Pooker.... Okay so it might have been the pregnancy hormones and the hormone supplements that made me feel that way.... but I still felt it. I cried over it...... many many many times.

I made myself "better" when I decided I would make Kit Kat's breastfeeding goal "two years." I was more thinking it would (perhaps) make up for missing Pooker's goal. But then when I nursed Kit Kat for the very first time..... that thought process changed. I was now making the two year goal for Kit Kat..... not to make up for Pooker.

I wanted to take some pictures today, as a way to mark today's importance.

(one happy one.....)

(and one sweet one.)

**Wait did I type "to mark today's importance?" Why yes I did!

You see today is not just a birthday for a very special miracle baby. Not just a day to look back at the 3 minutes it took for Kit Kat to make her entrance. No... it is more than that. Today is the realization of a goal set long before she was brought into this world. A goal that I have stuck to (like super glue.) A goal I have defended (to many.) A goal I have dreamed about. A goal we reached TOGETHER; through all the hard times, all the sweet moments, all the times she has said "I want to eat NOW" (literally.)

So for every  long "sigh", every muttered "mmmmmm", every pat on the Nummie Makers, every sleepy latch, for every bite (ouchy), for every lick (yeah that one is still weird..she thinks she is a "woof woof") and for every speechless look in her eyes....... Happy Birthday/Nummie Lovin' Day to my precious Kit Kat. We did it my little Lover Bean...... we did it!

**Now please pardon me while I go get a tissue and a snuggle from my birthday girl!**

***Two years and counting.....***

Extended/Full Term Breastfeeding

So now that Kit Kat and I are fixing to hit our 2 year milestone......(truly amazing to me still!) I am beginning to think about the term "extended" and "full term" breastfeeding. There is enough negative thoughts about breastfeeding, in the world, and to add the terms "extended" and "full term" in front of "breastfeeding" might make it seem "worse" to the nay sayers.

I thought I would explain what "extended/full term" breastfeeding is and what it means to me (aka Mummie.)

Extended breastfeeding is described as this: Breastfeeding PAST one year. Yupp... that is all. All it means is that you are nursing your Nummie Lover after they turned one year old. So I guess that makes me an extended breastfeeder to the second power. :-)

Dr. Sears has a great article about "extended breastfeeding." What I love is that he mentions The World Health Organization and their feelings on breastfeeding. Here is what he says:
"The World Health Organization (WHO) officially recommends mothers breastfeed until three years of age. (Yes, you did read that right!) Even the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends mothers should breastfeed "at least until one year of age and then as long as baby and mother mutually want to."
Did you see that.....  the pretty word I highlighted in Mummie's favorite color???? The word MUTUALLY. Why would we stop breastfeeding just because our Nummie lover turned one? Is it because our breastmilk stops being packed full of beneficial nummies? (NO.) Is it because our nummie lover's should be old enough to drink out of a sippy? (NO.) Is it because "well you stop formula at one year old." (errrrr NO.) How about "well a paci should be taken away at one... aren't you just a paci?" (Yeah.... NO!) Oh it must be because.... well they are just too old, right? (a big PHAT NO!)

Why take something away when it is still beneficial, still comforting, causing no harm, and both Mummie and Nummie Lover are not ready? It makes no sense to stop something that is causing NO harm, in any way, and why stop when it is continues to be beneficial to me and my Nummie Lover? I mean really.... breastmilk does not change over night. It doesn't change at all...... it only grows with your growing Nummie Lover and continues to change as your Nummie Lover's needs change.

To me the word "extended" and "full term" are very descriptive. They are not bad words by any means. I can see why people would use them, in describing breastfeeding. But I choose not to use them. Why fuel the fire? I simply say "yes, I breastfeed" or "I am currently breastfeeding" and leave it at that. If people ask how old my "baby" is I answer honestly (and secretly study their face for a response!) One person, when realized I am breastfeeding (Kit Kat was 20 months old at the time) asked my husband "she is still breastfeeding? Isn't that weird?" My husband's response was "no..... why would it be weird?" (yes Mummies..... I married him for a reason!!!!!And he is all mine!)

So carry on Mummies! Carry On!!!!!

Bamboobies review and giveaway

To continue our MONTH LONG "Lovin' My Mummie's Nummies Birthday Bash" (Happy 2nd birthday to Kit Kat... who still loves her Mummie's Nummies!).... Bamboobies has signed up for protection! (hehe)

Bamboobies (what a name right! I LOVE it!) is a company that creates "Super-soft and eco Bamboo breast pads for nursing mothers." We have all been there.... you are out and about, with your Nummie Lover. You forgot to add your "nipple pads" to your "going out in public outfit" and you loose all track of time (perhaps even forget about your Nummie Lover needing "nummies.") Then you feel it....the tingle. You look down and.... OH MY LORD! You have crater size wet circles on your shirt........ Oh YEAH! Time to breastfeed!!!!

I was so guilty of this. There were even times when I looked at my husband and said "Ummmm it is time to eat.... FAST!" I began using disposable breastpads.... but they are not all created equally, they can get pretty expensive...not to mention the whole "not green thing." One day my husband (yeah my husband!) saw cloth breastpads! (Pretty cool he saw those!) That is when my world changed! No more bunching, no more crunching.... I was over the toss aways!

BUT I was not all in love with my newly found cloth leak stoppers. They were not all that soft and sometimes my "nips" would get stuck on them (OUCH!) But I just dealt. Dealt I did! I was a leaker for 8 months (every day) and a leaker still..... every once in a blue moon. So when I came across Bamboobies I was curious. What I found to be interesting was they use three layers: Organic Bamboo and Cotton Velure on the Nummie Maker side, the middle is made of hemp so it is super absorbent, and the outer side is just soooooo soft it is crazy! Honestly I just wanted to snuggle with the Bamboobie! Then I thought that was a bit weird (even for me) and put them down!

Oh did I mention that they are a heart shape design? The shape is not just for fun... but it also is the  best shape to contour your Nummie Makers.. think of a heart as love and hugs...... well the Bamboobie breast pad hugs your nummie makers! Awwwww! OHHHHH and plus they come in HOT PINK! When you are wearing a nursing bra, covered in baby spew, poo, pee, and what ever else that leaks.... it is the little things that help make you feel pretty!

Here are my Bamboobies!
I just love the Mummie with the hearts on her Nummie Makers!

(Yeah..... I picked the hot pink! I could not resist!)

I tried to trick my Bamboobies...... Since I was not "leaky" at the time I tried them out.....(go figure!) But I put them through a Mummie's Nummies test! I got a medicine dropped and filled it with water. I then proceeded to "drip" the water onto the Bamboobies. To my surprise it really held! Nothing leaked out or leaked through, nothing was cold to the touch, and it all remained super soft! I say it passed with flying HOT PINK colors!

Bamboobies was so excited about Kit Kat turning TWO that they wanted to share the "breastfeeding is beautiful.... Do it in style" LOVE! They are offering up a $16.99 credit to their store! Yupp! You can either get 2 pair pack of these loveable nursing pads  or you can use the $16.99 toward ANY Bamboobies Product purchase in their store!!!!! (Do I hear shopping spree?!)

Oh hey.... it gets better! They are even offering up a 20% discount to EVERYONE!!!!!!!!! Type your fingers over to Bamboobies website and use the code "MMNM20."

READY??? SET..... GOOOOOO!

Sweetamagoos Breastfeeding Necklace Giveaway!

To continue our MONTH LONG "Lovin' My Mummie's Nummies Birthday Bash" (Happy 2nd birthday to Kit Kat... who still loves her Mummie's Nummies!).... Sweetamagoos is bringing a party favor! Yipper Skipper! She is bringing a unique style of Nursing Necklace!

I have one of her nursing necklaces.... and I love it! Kit Kat is a pretty big fan of it too! She likes to put her leg through it (while nursing) and play with the wooden beads. She also likes to walk around with it on and say "I am Mommy." (super cute!) Here is the one I have:
(Come on.... you think I would go with any other color than pink??!!)

I met Brandice, owner of Sweetamagoos, at The Big Latch On Event I hosted earlier this year. She came, with her cute little Nummie Lover, and participated! (She was one of the 27 "latcher oners" at that event location!)

Each necklace doubles as a nursing and teething necklace! Beautiful vibrant colors attract babies attention and prevents distractions while nursing. Drooly mouthed teethers will love having something safe to gnaw on around mommy's neck! Excellent for baby wearing, especially when your out and about since, unlike toys&teething rings, baby cannot drop it on the germy floor. This necklace is also great for anyone looking for an alternative to costume jewelry which often contains BPA and lead paint.

Necklace is made from 1" wooden beads and 100% cotton fabric. Fabric is double stitched for safety and ribbon closures are double stitched 2 inches inside to prevent detachment. The beads provide resistance against babies gums and fabric absorbs baby drool.

Necklace measures approximately 20" with 10" ribbon closures on each side. Necklace contains 6 beads so that soft fabric touches mommys neck for comfort. If you want extra beads or an extra long/short necklace or ribbon closures message me and I'll be happy to create a custom piece for you!

Sweetamagoos (gosh I just love that name!) is offering one of you one of her awesome necklaces!

So what say you? Wanna play a party favor game?! Okay ready set go!

Surgery while breastfeeding

**Disclaimer.... okay I didn't mean actually having surgery while breastfeeding AT THE SAME TIME! Just having a surgery when you have a Nummie Lover at home waiting for you....**

With the almost certainty of surgery to correct my De Quervain's Disease (Yeah still sounds like a killer illness) looming over my Nummie Making self...... the fear of what will happen to my "Nummies" and how will it affect my Nummie Lover is very present. I have been against surgery (since I hurt my hand back in June... and then again from the car accident in July) and I have given it all I have to correct it. I have been going to Occupational Therapy two times a week since July, wore a splint for 3 months straight. I have seen improvement and even reached a place where I thought "Heck yeah! I don't need no stinkin' surgery!" BUT the past month has not been so good. My wrist and thumb have decided to get worse. So for every step forward I took (in therapy) I then took 3 steps backwards. Then one morning, last week, while in the shower washing my hair..... the pain was so severe I skipped the whole hair conditioning step and called the surgeon. After that.... I contacted my trusty friends over at Le Leche Laugue!

Le Leche League Help Forum is AWESOME! I once again turned to them for help. Below is the conversation between me and my awesome consultant, Heidi.

"Hi. I am hoping you can help me. I am looking at possible surgery for my wrist tendinitis, which would mean I would have to put "under" during the surgery. My "Nummie Lover", Katelyn, will be two yrs old on Nov. 14.... but she continues to nurse 3-4 times a day. My question is how safe is anesthesia while breastfeeding, when can I resume breastfeeding, what are the risks.... all that fun stuff. I want to be "educated" before I see my doctor on Wednesday.
Thank you so very much!
Jacky"

"Dear Jacky,
Congratulations on breastfeeding so successfully! You likely don't have to worry about this at all since Katelyn is older and not a newborn. Keep in mind that mothers give birth everyday via c-sec surgery and go on to breastfeeding immediately. You can read more about it here Kelly Mom
Look up specific medications on the The Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed) search
Heidi"

"Thank you! I came across the same link from KellyMom as you sent.... but wanted to make double sure it was still accurate. Breastfeeding has been and IS important to me... and I don't want to stop until she is ready. My fear was that she wont be ready (when I have the surgery) but would have no choice. So I am able to bf when I wake up (or really get home) following surgery? (Like I said double making sure! hehe)
My doc is not very educated when it comes to breastfeeding. SO I want t make sure I have all my info to give him. (He is supportive... but I want to him to have the right information.)
Thanks again for your fast response! I LOVE you ladies!
Jacky"

"Dear Jacky,
as soon as you feel able to safely handle your child, you are conscience enough to breastfeed. truly these medications are short acting and are out of your system when you wake up
Heidi"

Straight from KellyMom:

"General anesthesia should not affect breastfeeding. You can safely nurse once you are awake and alert enough to hold your baby. By that time, the amount of medication in your bloodstream is low enough that the amounts in your milk would not be significant. The point at which you wake up after general anesthesia is the point where enough of the drug has left your system that it no longer has an effect. In addition, pediatric surgeries require anesthesia - and that is a more serious exposure than through mom's milk. Mom might want to nurse just before the procedure in case she's out for a while or too groggy to function normally for a bit. See the articles and references below for more detailed information."

And I can PROMISE you I WILL ask my doctor what medicine he will be using. Just so I can research it. Never hurts to double check yourself! I also have a bunch of print outs to bring with me.... oh yeah he is gonna love me!

So you heard here Mummies! You can have surgery and breastfeed too! (Just not at the same time.)

I go to the doctor tomorrow (11-9-11)....... but you know I will keep you posted how it all goes! (And I do mean ALL!!)

Earth Mama Angel Baby Milkmaid Tea review and giveaway

To continue our month long "Lovin' My Mummie's Nummies Birthday Bash", (HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY KIT KAT, who still loves her Mummie's Nummies!!) Earth Mama Angel Baby has signed up to bring the beverage!

Now, most of you know that I have been a HUGE supporter of Earth Mama Angel Baby for YEARS! Ever since I found their Healing Hearts Baby Loss Comfort site and their Baby Loss Comfort products .... this company has remained close to my heart.

So I was BEYOND excited when last week, "Social Mama" (man I love their nick names!) sent me some Organic Milkmaid Tea.

I remember the days where I was ALL about Hot Chocolate. (To be honest when I was preggers with Pooker I was ADDICTED to Hot Chocolate. The thought of Tea (or even Coffee) made me cringe! But somewhere along the road, something changed. Somewhere along my journey I GREW UP! Instead of having an outrageous supply of Hot Chocolate (of just about every flavor), my cabinets are now filled with Teas and Coffee! (I noticed the other day that I still have some Hot Chocolate boxes in my pantry..... and **GASP** I did not have any with drawl shakes. I just pushed right on by the boxes!....... okay.... and I went for the tea!)

What interested me in Earth Mama Angel Baby's Organic Milkmaid Tea (other than being from Earth Mama Angel Baby) was the fact that the tea is 100% Organic, Caffeine free, 100% recyclable AND has all the herbal ingredients that help boost Breastmilk supply!!!

Now you know I would not partake in this awesomeness, known as Organic Milkmaid Tea, without snapping a few photos! So here is the outside of the box....
(LOVE the photo of the nursing angel Mummie!!)

And here is a photo of my ready to drink tea!

(Please pardon the tea cup.... although my taste buds have grown up..... my tea cup collection has not!)

I did try a bunch of different ways to drink it. Here is what I did (per cup)
*Added honey
*Added powdered creamer
*Added honey and milk
*Made a pitcher of cold tea with sugar
*Drank it by itself

All ways were fantastic! There really is nothing better on a cold morning (or day) than a yummy cup of hot tea! (See there is that grown up again!)

I never doubted that this tea would help boost my Nummie supply. I have researched it A LOT.... so I knew it would work. But I was unsure of how well it would work. Well.... let me put it this way.....On the morning of day 2 (our first feeding of the day) Kit Kat thought that her Nummie Makers were TOYS! She was nursing on the first side and "playing" with the other side! She must have thought "Wow! Mommy got me a ball for my birthday!" Oh yeah AND I woke up a bit "bigger" than normal! PLUS while she was nursing she made a lot of "mmmmmmmmmm" sounds. (Pretty rare for her!)

So yeah! My vote is IT WORKED!!!!! (Even for an established Nummie maker like me!)

So who wants some of this awesomeness for themselves?! Earth Mama Angel Baby is giving away one box of their Organic Milkmaid Tea.... to one of you!!!!! (So much fun going to parties when they have goodies!) So read on........ and good luck!

The big fake out

Sometimes, just sometimes, you have to call their bluff.

Kit Kat has a new game... one that I am not too happy to play. (But I have gotten smarter about it.) Lately
when it is time to "switch sides" she will tell me "No, I'm done." The first time I heard that I about feel off the chair! **Really??!! You are all done? But you have one more side!!! Then all the images of me walking around with one HUGE breast all day about freaked me out!** Then as if she could read my mind she giggled and said "No, I not done. I want other side now."

So for DAYS and DAYS, she played this "little game"...... to the point I begin thinking she is really almost "done." (Her giggling every time kinda gave it away that she was playing though.)

So I decide to play back.

One morning she did her whole nursing on the first side thing..... "No I'm done now" game..... then I shot back with "Okay, you are all done. Mommy will put it away now" and proceeded to "put them away." OHHHHHHHHHHH my the look on her face....PRICELESS! It was more of a deer caught in the headlights kinda look! You know the one.... eyes bigger than pizzas..... get bigger as the seconds tick by. The look of absolute SHOCK and FRIGHT! Then she busted out with the biggest 7 am shriek I think I have ever heard. "NOOOOOO I NOT DONE!!!!" and dove across my body to "the other side."

Yes Mummies.... I called her bluff. I think I won that game.

Making Mama's Milk review and giveaway!

The winner is Misty!!! CONGRATS!

To kick off our month long "Lovin' My Mummie's Nummies Birthday Bash", (HAPPY 2ND BIRTHDAY KIT KAT, who still loves her Mummie's Nummies!!) Dori from Making Mama's Milk and More is giving away a month supply of her lactation cookies! I  mean really... what is a party without snacks?! (And a snack that helps boost the Mummie's Nummies...... oh it fits right in!!!)

A few weeks ago, Dori sent me some of her Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal Raisin lactation cookies. (Here are my yummy treats.)

Making Mama's Milk and More uses all organic ingredients and the cookies are 100% dairy free. They even make Vegan cookies. The cookies contain Fenugreek, Blessed Thistle, Flax Seed, Brewers Yeast and Whole Rolled Oats.....all the ingredients to help boost your special nummies! (Just a caution.... those of you who are "with nummie lover" *AKA pregnant* please check with your doctor before eating anything with Fenugreek or Blessed Thistle.)

The cookies were pretty tasty! Now..... you now me.... I am super partial to anything chocolate.... so my vote goes to the chocolate chip cookies.

Ahhhhhh BUT did they work? Well...... there again.... you know me..... Kit Kat has NEVER been a pumping kinda lady. She is strictly a "straight from the tap" kinda girl. So I can not tell you an exact amount. But on day 3 (after eating 2 cookies a day) for the first time in a while..... I felt let down! Oh yeah..... that is right! And not juts any let down.... I mean "hard core, new born Nummie Lover, breastmilk just came in, OMG what is happening to my other Nummie Maker, gotta hurry up to keep up" kinda let down! So yeah.... I say they work! (hehe.)

So what do you say? Would you like to party on down and enjoy come Nummie boosting cookies?

Well we are giving away A MONTH LONG supply of cookies! Here we go!!!!!
