Breastfed baby needs help

There are some stories that rip your heart in half. Stories that make you wonder the reasoning behind such tragedy. Stories that stop you in your tracks and you grab for your heart. The story I am about to share with you.... is one of those stores.

Meet Baby Nicholas:

A miracle baby, in his own right...... Doctors said his Mummie could not have children.

Born two weeks early due to an amniotic fluid problem.... He was in the NICU for about a week and then released into the arms of his Mummie. This Mummie constantly pumped and was very strict with his feedings..... doing all she could to keep him healthy.

A little guy, only weeks old. So innocent. So dependent on those around him, to love him, care for him.......... No doubt the love his  Mummie's life. Days that should be spent bonding with his Mummie, taking in the scent of her, the feel of her touch, the beat of her heart, the safeness of her embrace......... these days are over for Nicholas.

Nicholas' Texas apartment caught fire and it took everything.... including his Mummie. Nicholas' grandmother saved him by passing him to a neighbor...... after the neighbor kicked in his patio wall to save them. Nicolas' Mummie, Carrie, went back into the apartment to get something (not sure what) but was not able to get back out. She later died in the hospital.

With only the clothes on their backs..... Nicholas and his grandmother are finding out how to start over.... minus one heart. Not only are they in need of daily items....  but this family is also looking for breastmilk donations. In the wake of what they are going through...... this little family wants to continue what the Mummie started........ to nourish Nicholas with breast milk -- for as long as possible.

My hope is that Baby Nicholas will someday know the love his Mummie had for him and her determination to keep him safe and healthy. Maybe, by some miracle, he will remember her embrace, her scent, her touch, her voice. Even if only in a passing dream......

My heart breaks for this family......Such a tragedy. A loss of what is most important to this baby.... His Mummie.

A loss of not only a mother.... but also a daughter. A mother AND a baby now must find a way to carry on......... with part of their hearts missing.

Taken away too soon.

If you are interested in helping this little Nummie Lover, please contact me. I will get you in contact with a friend of this family, who will be able to give you more details.

Check out how to ship breastmilk or if you would like to donate any gift cards or other items, go to your local Wells Fargo bank for the Carrie Jordan Memorial Fund.

Breastfeeding mom denied room to breastfeed

When will the day come when all breastfeeding Mummies will be treated like NORMAL human beings? When will breastfeeding Mummies be looked at as women who are ONLY feeding their baby and not some nasty, rat infested, beaten and dented old trash can? I mean... is that too much to ask for? Is it too  much to be looked at as a person?

The other day I was contacted by Ang. When she contacted me..... I was reminded how far we still need to go, in normalizing breastfeeding. I do not use the term "Normalize Breastfeeding" very often...... it has a "well breastfeeding is different and not normal" tone to it.... and breastfeeding is NOT different and IS normal....... There should not be a difference between breastfeeding and bottle feeding. Bottles have nipples.... women have nipples.... both bottles and women use nipples to feed their babies.... NO DIFFERENCE!

So... back to Ang. Ang is a Mummie of a 9 year old son and an 8.5 month old Nummie Lover. She took both of her sons shopping to Forman Mills, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. While shopping..... her youngest son got hungry (because all babies get hungry.... heck I get hungry.... when you are hungry.... you EAT. Not a new concept.... am I right?) sooooooo while her oldest was trying some clothes on, Ang thought it would be a great time to breastfeed her baby. She did not want to leave her son alone, so she decided.... she would breastfeed in a dressing room. A quiet place.... a shielded place away from negative people who could possibly give her grief. A pretty safe bet right? NO! The dressing room attendant looked at her with a huge question mark above her head. (Why would this lady want a dressing room if she is does not have any clothes to try on?) Ang asked if she could go in and nurse, but when the attendant still looked dumbfounded.... she asked "I want to go in and breastfeed my son. Is that ok?"

Now hang on.... hold on to your Nummie Lovin' babies.... 'cause this will cause you to drop them!

The dressing room attendant said (and I am quoting here) ", I dont think" AND Ang said she had a very "disgusted" look upon her face.

WAIT... HUH?! WHAT!!!!! This Mummie was DENIED a dressing room to breastfeed in?! W....H....A.....T?????????!!!

Now the dressing room was NOT busy.... Ang told me that there was only one other person in the dressing room. She also asked the dressing room attendant if she could breastfeed because she wanted to get a "number"...... as the dressing room had curtains and nor doors that can be locked. She did not want anyone walking into her dressing room.... so having a number would say "Hey someone is in here.... move on to the next room." All the while, Ang was just trying to be respectful.... even when she was not given the same respect.
When she was DENIED a room, Ang responded with "Are you kidding me?! So I have to go in my car and feed? Where it would be the same exact thing only hot out there?!" The response she got was a shrug of her shoulders.

Now sadly.... Ang tried to nurse in the car.... but her Nummie Lover was too hot... so it did not go over so well.

Ang did go and talk to the Store Manager (who happens to be a breastfeeding Mummie herself!), who was very apologetic and told Ang that she would let the sales associate know right away. That made me feel pretty good...... I mean it is AWESOME that the manager (first of all) is a breastfeeding Mummie and (second) apologized and was going to speak with the associate. BUT what gave the associate the THOUGHT that she has the right to DENY anyone a dressing room?! I don't care if someone just wants to sit down and read a book......It is not a VIP club and you are not the Head Bouncer! You do NOT deny anyone a space like that. Her step-son was trying clothes on.... for Nummie Lovin' sake! This Mummie did not need to bring clothes into this dressing room......She is spending money at this store.... if she can use the PUBLIC bathroom then she should have FULL rights to a flippin' PUBLIC dressing room!

Now.... PHEW... calm down Mummie..... calm down. Soothing breaths... IN.... OUT... IN.. OUT........... Okay... I am better now.

I want to applaud the store manager for the way she reacted in such a positive way. I am glad she saw the error that was made and was going to correct it. That is AMAZING! BUT I have reached out to the Corporate office of Forman Mills. I simply want to know what their policy is on breastfeeding AND dressing room usage. I want to inform them of this horrendous act (the associate) and the amazing response of the manager. They have yet to respond...... but as soon as they do....... you KNOW I will post about it!

Does this require a Nurse-In? I do not think so. It seems the Store Manager knows what happened was wrong and planned on correcting it. I see no reason to take this any further. HOWEVER...... I do think that corporate should know about this and I feel that this should be addressed in a store meeting and/or training.

Breastfeeding Mummies want nothing more than to feed their babies. We do not want to make a scene. We do not want to create a knock'em sock'em duel. We just want to feed our babies. Isn't that what ANY mother wants?

What's in your bag?

Who wants to play a game? It is time for "WHAT IS IN YO' BAG?!"

I am known as the Mummie who carries the Mummie bag...... even when (the very FEW times I have been away from my girls) I still carry it! It is my purse, hand bag, luggage, "diaper bag"...... my Mary Poppins' bag. This bag can carry IT ALL! I am not kidding you.

Some people have asked me "What you got in there? One of your children?" My answer........ "everything BUT!"

So I decided to show you!

SO here I am carrying my bag...

(this picture is my bag (And yours truly) on any given day BEFORE we leave our house. Yes... I said BEFORE.)

Here is what is inside my bag (on and given day.)

Let's see...... Shall we break this photo down?
1 just in case book
1 emergency diaper
1 bag of wipies (cause those things are AWESOME!)
1 cloth towel (just in case a sneeze produces some icky boogers)
1 container of bleach wipes (Never leave home without!)
1 coupon booklet
2 (homemade) purple flower hair clips
1 purple bow hair clip (Now that is where that one went!)
1 strawberry sunglasses (the other one... okay the other THREE are in the van)
1 wallet
1 pack of crayons
1 pad of paper and 1 pen
1 bag of Cheerios (Normally have crackers too)
1 set of cloth breastpads (Hmmmmmm guess I have not cleaned out my diaper bag in a while! I haven't used those in over a year!)
1 stack of Mummie's Nummies business cards (of course!)

1 medium size pink "cleaner stuff" bag that contains the following:
3 travel size bleach wipes (I have a problem.....)
4 Purex hand wipe singles
2 travel containers of hand sanitizer (the jugs are in the van! Again.... problem... I know... I have one.)

1 small floral "just in case" bag that contains the following:
1 chap stick
1 Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter
1 travel nail file
1 travel thermometer forehead sticker thingy
1 6 second thermometer
1 pair of teeny scissors
1 nail clippers
3 travel diaper rash cream (never used it... but what the heck.... just in case.)
1 travel size cloth face wipes (Just need water! Never used it... but again.... just in case.)
20 pink plastic trash bags (?)
1 travel tissue pack

Good Gravy! Oh but that is not all. Remember how I said that this was BEFORE we got out of the house? Well I wanted to share with you what I carry in my bag when we LEAVE the house. (Bare with me.. my crop and paste skills are kinda lacking.)

For Pooker:
1 Angelina Ballerina
1 Jessie (from Toy Story)
1 Captain America
1 pink Snuggly
2 Innotab Tablets

1 Pink sippy cup
1 water bottle
1 kindle (me hehe)
1 emergency sports drink for me (yeah yeah..... Hey at least I am being cautious! If I feel some Vasao Vagal Syncope coming... down that drink goes!)
2 snack bowls for the Cheerios

For Kit Kat:
1 Underdog (big dog)
1 T-Bone (little dog.. get it... he is a Tiny dog holding a bone.... T for Tiny...... Bone for what he is holding........ ok.)
1 pink snuggly

Sometimes they will bring their own bags and stuff them full of stuff too...... this also does not include the books, toys and blankets we have in MeMe the Mini Van. Also does not include what we bring when Daddy comes along, or my phone and keys.

See why I need such a big Mary Poppins' bag?

So..... what you got in Yo' Bag?!

P.S. This is actually a lot less than what I normally carried when the girls were younger. I HAVE scaled down.... I swear!

Lactation Cookie Recipe

A good number of Mummies have asked me about a Lactation Cookie Recipe. Although I have worked with some AWESOME lactation cookie companies..... sometimes just cooking your own is easier.

Below you will find a Lactation Cookie Recipe. Feel free to comment if you have tried it and tell me what you think!

What you need:
1 cup soften butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
4 tablespoons water
1 cup MILLED Flaxseed Meal (Can lessen the amount to 1/2 cup if preferred.)
2 eggs (or 3 egg whites)
1 teaspoon Vanilla
2 cups of Flour (can use whole wheat flour)
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
1 teaspoon Salt
3 cups of Oats ( NOT instant oatmeal)
1 cup (or more.... I always go more!) nuts, choco chips, white choco chips, raisins, peanut butter chips, coconut flakes, candy pieces (think Heath Bar Toffee.) You can add just about ANYTHING to this recipe. That is the best part! What ever tickles your fancy.... add it! (this is the EXTRA SPECIAL ingredient.)
2-4 tablespoons of Brewers Yeast

How you do it:
1. Preheat over to 375 degrees
2. Mix the Flaxseed Meal and water. Set aside for later.
3. Combine and beat butter, Sugar, Brown Sugar and eggs.
4. Add the Flaxseed Meal/water mix and add Vanilla to the butter and sugar mix.
5. Combine Flour, Brewers Yeast, Salt, Cinnamon and Baking Soda in a SEPARATE bowl.
6. Slowly add the DRY ingredients (Flour mixture) to the WET ingredients (butter/sugar mix)
7. Add the oats and any extra special ingredients.
8. Drop cookies into a greased cookie sheet and bake 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

To start with......Eat 3-4 cookies for the first 2-3 days. After that eat 2-3 cookies until you are happy with your supply (Days 4 and 5.) Then eat 1-2 cookies a day after that!

If you make these and change up the special ingredients.... let me know! I always in the mood for some cookies!

Good luck and happy cookie eating!!!!

Today's "Foto Friday" is a little different. It is not breastfeeding related..... nor is it a foto of my family. Today's Foto is of a friend's daughter.

Today I want to introduce to you, Ana.
Ana is a lively 10 year old girl, who on any normal day looks like the little girl next door. She loves her baby sister, her Fur-Siblings, her Mummie and her Daddy. She has a gymnast's heart (and the medals to prove it.)
But this little girl next door fights a hard battle.

Ana was a (PROUD) level 4 gymnasts for almost five years. In the Spring of 2011 she
took home fourth place in the State meet for her division, scoring nothing
lower than a 9.0.

By February of 2012 she was almost unable to compete. Ana
had never fallen off the beam or bars, but in her most recent meet she
fell from the beam twice. Her hands were so swollen she couldn't fit into
her grips, wasn't able to hold the bar and came off of it during her routine.
She now is unable to do gymnastics and has to sit out at PE.

But why?

Ana was diagnosed at age 8 with Polyarticular Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA.)
She spent two years in and out of casts while they tried to figure out what was wrong with her feet.
She now has arthritis in her feet, knees, hands and hips.

(From a recent trip to the ER.... she handles it like the Boss she is...... but she should not have to!)

She has attended Camp Boggey Creek which is a camp for kids with childhood diseases.
It was amazing for her and she came home with many new friends.

As of right now her Rhuematologist and Opthamologist are in St. Pete so they
travel there every six weeks and she soon will have to see neurologist as

Ana's in pain almost every day, her hands and feet are very swollen almost on a daily basis.
She takes medicine 2x a day, weekly injections and other
medicine for the pain.

She is now having to use a wheel chair, as she is in too much pain to walk and too heavy for her Mummie to carry. The wheel chair is on an as needed basis, but with Ana's spirit, she rocks the wheels pretty hard!

All Ana wants is to give her disease some attention. She wants everyone to know about this disease and  how it affects these amazing young people. This little girl is so strong, that she does not want the attention for herself. All she wants is for this disease to be known and cured... not just for her..... but for all who fight this battle.

She has a website, to help raise money and awareness, for JRA. I got word that half of what is raised will be donated to The Arthritis Foundation, help find a cure and the rest will go toward helping this amazing girl.

She is a super star in my book!

You know I always say to "rock your journey!" Ana's journey is very different than the breastfeeding journeys we rock. But she is rocking her JRA Journey the best way she knows how........ Ana Style!

You go Girl!

How do you breastfeed?

There are about an infinite amount of ways you can breastfeed. Between all of the combinations and techniques.... there can be an endless amount of breastfeeding journeys.

Every way is special and awesome. What works for one may not work for another.... each journey is as unique as....well.... as NIPPLES and BREASTS! No matter how you do it, where you do it, when you do it or how long you do it...... you did/do it! And for that single reason...... you deserve a special post and a special badge of breastfeeding honor! So for all of you Mummies..... this is for you! Feel free to copy and share your special badge (or badges!)

Be proud of your badges Mummies! Breastfeeding isn't always easy and sometimes a little badge of honor can give you a wee little Nummie Boost!

Can  you think of any other badges? Have you earned any that I did not mention? Feel free to share your badges with us!

"I want some Nummies"

I was totally going to post about how we are on day 19 of Kit Kat's self weaning..... day 19 of NO nummies.

I was SO going to explain how every other day, in the shower, I hand express.... just to see if I can get a stream (or two) to shoot the shower wall....... (Maybe more like "ready-aim-fire" instead of "hand express." Okay and I do both sides!)

I was also going to say how well I was "adjusting" to our new morning routine. How I could lay in bed (a wee bit longer) and not have to worry about Kit Kat waiting (errrr freaking out) for her morning nummies.

I was going to mention how well Kit Kat is doing, although she seems to be a bit more reluctant to give up her paci in the mornings (she knows she has to leave it in her bed) but over all she seems pretty happy with her "decision" to be done with her nummies.

Oh and I was going to mention how she was so very curious when she watched a friend's (Hi Chrissy!) toddler "eating" while we had a little mini playdate last week.

I guess I can still technically tell you all that........  (which is a good thing...... 'cause I kinda just did.)

But today's post changed course about an hour ago. You see...... while sitting on the couch, during Daddy's lunch time (he comes home for lunch everyday...... yeah we are lucky like that!)..... Kit Kat got into her "hold me like a baby" position (yeah she says that often. In her little munchkin voice--think Lolipop Kids from Wizard of Oz-- and "Hold me like a baaaaaby" is too precious to resist!) then proceeded to say "Mommy I want some of your Nummies."
Me: "Really?"
Kit Kat: "Yes. I want some Nummies." Then proceeds to pull my shirt down.
Me: (Looks at Mr. Mummie and shrugs while Mr. Mummie smiles and shrugs back. LOVE how he knew I could not resist her... and how he just smiled his approving smile.) "Okay."
Kit Kat: (giggles and then says) "Yippie" (Yippie?! That was a new one.) **Munch munch munch........"mmmmmm mmmm mmmm" Munch munch munch...."mmmmmm mmmm mmm."
Me: "You getting any?"
Kit Kat: (nods) "hmmm hmmmm."

(You know I had to ask for my cell phone (it was out of reach.. so Mr. Mummie got it for me)... I HAD to get a picture of this! I mean this could be our "last" photo!)

The girl would not even let go to say goodbye to daddy.... he had to lean over and kiss her on the forehead (and mine too!) and still...... she stayed. Then she popped off and said "I want more. I want this side" (smacks my other nummie maker.)

And what do you think was my response? Take a guess:

Hey, I never said my babies don't walk all over me. But look at those faces (JUST LOOK!) I bet you would be a walking mat as well.

All I have to say is..... Couldn't you do this on Saturday.... when Mummie hosted the Big Latch On?! Girl, we could not be counted two years in a row! But NOW you want some nummies?! Oye.

Rock your breastfeeding journey, Mummies.... Rock them loud and proud!

I was HONORED and hummbled to receive this award, as I was not expecting it. A HUG thank you goes out to The Health Department and the WIC Department for honoring me and Mummie's Nummies.  It is truly an honor!
